How Much Would You Pay?

We hope all our colleagues around the world had a fantastic start into 2010. We took advantage of a few relatively quiet days to make major progress on our book. We are still on target for a spring publication of "The Entrepreneurial Linguist: The Business-School Approach to Freelance Translation," which we are planning on self-publishing on Lulu. We are able to set our own price, and we are in the process of determining what the price should be. We'd like to make a modest profit off our work, but we also want the book to be accessible, price-wise, to everyone. As it stands at the moment, the book will be a nicely bound paperback of high quality with approximately 150 pages, illustrations, graphs, and a detailed glossary.

What do you, dear readers, think in terms of pricing? How much would you pay? We'd love to hear from you. Simply leave a comment. Thanks, in advance, for your input.

$25. I'd rather have a paperback if that's what it takes to keep the pricing low. Thanks for asking!

Hello!
Best wishes to you for an inspiring and wonderful 2010!
Really looking forward to your publication y the way. Regarding your price issue; I think I would pay anything between 12 and 20 euros or am I very cheap? Wishing you a very bright year, best regards,
Astrid

I also would go with $25. Btw. I love the Web 2.0 thing of asking the community what they think.

Happy New Year, Twins. It’s very nice from you asking your readers such an important issue. Very web 2.0 ideas. Pricing is a difficult thing. U should take into account your expenditures, earnings, foreseen sales, etc. But, you already know about this. Sorry. So, going back to your question and based on Judy’s presentation at the ATA’s Annual Conference in NYC (which was so interesting) I would pay 15€-25€. I’m willing to read the book.

Maybe US$ 15-20, if it's in paperback format.

When I published my (similar length) book on Lulu 3 years ago I priced it at $19.95 and to be honest I don't think anyone has ever complained that it was too expensive. So I think that with 3 years of inflation you could go for $25. What really turns me off (I know you wouldn't do this) is when people charge an insanely high price for business advice books and then try to put a positive spin on it, like "We charge $100 an hour for consulting, so $90 for our 100 page book is actually a bargain" or whatever. I think that anything in the $20-$25 range is totally reasonable.

I think $20 US dollars would be pretty good price.

Depending on the length and the cover (hard/soft), I would think that €20 would be acceptable price.

Thanks for your comments, everyone! Much appreciated. Right now, it looks like we will go with $25 for a nicely bound paperback book. It's not final yet, but it looks like that would be a good price. Excellent input; much appreciated.

I would pay around €20 (probably including the shipping fees to Portugal). And I'm looking forward to reading it!

$20-$25... and you can consider that as a pre-order from me!

I'd like to express interest in an eBook format in addition to paperback, either through Lulu or Amazon (preferably Amazon, or Lulu without DRM, since I own a Kindle). I think $15-$20 would be reasonable for an electronic edition, if you chose to make it available as such.

Looking forward to reading it in any case!

@Diana: thanks for your input. The price would be exclusive of shipping rates, as those will differ depending on where you live and what type of shipping to choose. It shouldn't be that pricey to ship to Portugal for a relatively light book.

Riccardo: thanks! We have added you to the pre-order list.

@Daniel: excellent idea about the e-book, thanks for sharing. We'd toyed with the idea, and decided to go for the printed book, and we could certainly consider doing both at some point.
